The origins of elevators trace back to the earliest mechanical systems used by people to lift weights. In ancient times, such systems, particularly those employing the use of water and animal power, were commonly utilized for elevating buckets within grain and water wells. However, the development of a design similar to today's elevators and the emergence of the modern elevator industry occurred during the industrial revolution period.
It is known that the first modern elevator was developed in the early 19th century by Sir William Armstrong, a British inventor and engineer. However, significant advancements in elevator technology and usage occurred in the latter half of the 19th century when American inventor Elisha Otis invented the first safe elevator equipped with a safety lock in 1853. This safety lock prevented the elevator from falling, ensuring the safe travel of individuals to tall buildings.
